i wrote an essay on the connection between them way back in my freshman year of college (on my computer that broke (that i broke), so i doubt i'll ever see it again) after seeing the play hangman (probably my favorite play, no idea if it was ever put on after the run i saw or if the script is available in any way), and i'd like to revisit that.
many people were bothered by the fact that a play about hanging people had so many jokes in it (i almost wrote an essay on how some of the jokes revolved around homophobia, which was another interesting aspect of the script). to them, it wasn't right to have jokes in proximity to capital crimes and capital punishment. i loved it, of course.
i think that not only do humor and horror work together, but that they add to each other so much. i'm not presenting this as a new opinion. actually, this was going to be a short post asking for recommendations on essays that talk about humor and horror, because i no longer have institutional access to jstor and can't look for these materials myself (i had the academia.edu app and found it useless, and now don't remember my password to try it on the computer). there are horror movies that are also comedies, like the masterful an american werewolf in london.
humor and horror both deal with unexpected proximities. they turn things inside out and make you see them in a way you didn't before. i'd have to find my essay to be able to further speak on how the two genres can amplify each other, but hopefully i can make a more extensive post after doing some reading.
